The Toronto Taxpayers Coalition is pleased to be hosting an outstanding panel to discuss Bill 8 and its impact on municipal government accountability and transparency. Featuring Ombudsman Andre Marin, and moderated by Newstalk 1010′s Jerry Agar, the forum is sure to take an in-depth look at the current need and potential future impact of the Bill, and what it means for our city governments.

Background: Historic changes are currently being made in the Ontario legislature with Bill 8, the Public Sector and MPP Accountability and Transparency Act, 2014, which amends the Ombudsman Act to enable the Ombudsman to take complaints about municipalities, universities, and school boards.

The need for further transparency in York Region has never been greater, as apparent with the recent disclosure that York Region councillors and top staff will be attending a 3-day private retreat that will cost the taxpayers $12,000 to $15,000. Not only is the price exuberant when the region is already in debt for $2 billion dollars, but the fact that the event could be held at home for a fraction of the price and is a closed-door retreat further calls into question the lack of transparency.

We hope you can join us for this unique event to discuss these issues and more. Members of the public can reserve their seat at http://www.torontotaxpayer.ca/events/behind-closed-doors/
