Rookie Councillor Sent To Penalty Box For Gambling on Pro Sports with Taxpayers Money

The Toronto Taxpayers Coalition reacted this morning to news that council’s Economic Development Committee voted 3-1 in favour of working with the NHL to bring a second professional hockey team to the city.

“Not a single dime of taxpayers’ money,” said Coalition President Matthew McGuire. “Taxpayers should not be subsidizing billionaires who employ millionaires.”

The proposal is being pushed by Councillor Josh Colle (Ward 15, Eglinton-Lawrence).

“Residents of Toronto have big enthusiasm for hockey and football. Councillor Colle should not confuse that for support of a taxpayer funded boondoggle,” McGuire added.

The Coalition wants to make sure all politicians know where it stands.

“When it comes to risky sports propositions, the taxpayer shouldn’t be put in the penalty box.”

The Toronto Taxpayers Coalition is a non-partisan organization founded in 2010 that advocates for lower taxes and accountable government in Toronto.
