The Toronto Taxpayers Coalition is calling for a ban on subsidies to sports teams. Matthew McGuire, president of the Coalition, says his group has submitted an amendment to the Economic Development Committee’s recommendation.
“When politicians start talking about professional sports teams, taxpayers need to put on their protective cups,” McGuire said.
The amendment, designed to protect taxpayers from risky schemes that almost never work out, reads as follows:
Toronto City Council establish a policy to prohibit municipal tax dollars from being utilized to subsidize professional sports teams. Such prohibition to include, but not be limited to; property tax abatement, contributions of real property, cash contributions for the construction of stadia, diversion of existing or future revenue, dedicated taxes, and full or partial ownership by the City of Toronto or any of its agencies, boards, and commissions.
